n  What is root canal treatment?

n  Why would you need the root canal treatment?

Root canal treatment is necessary when tooth’s pulp (soft tissue inside the root canal, also called nerves) got inflamed of infected.

Common causes of inflammation and infection are deep cavity, tooth crack, leaky filling, or an injury to a tooth such as severe knock…etc.

To treat the infection, it can be done by either removing the bacteria from the root canal system (root canal treatment), or tooth extraction. However, extracting the tooth isn't usually recommended, it’s better to keep your natural teeth as possible as it can.


n  How it is performed?

Dentists will examine by specific tools and x-rays the tooth, then administers local anesthetic. Small instruments will be used to clean the pulp from the pulp chamber and root canals. After space is cleaned and shaped, dentists fill tooth ‘s root canals with a biocompatible material.

The treatment may take few hours to complete, and may need to be carried out over a number of visits. Dentist may put a small amount of medication in the cleaned canal in between visits and the tooth will then be sealed using a temporary filling. Remaining bacteria and pulp may cause swelling and pain, dentists may give you some antibiotics and pain killer to help manage and prevent further infection.


If the tooth has a lot of decay or is missing a large portion, a dental crown(cap) or some restoration to protect the tooth will also be necessary.


n  Are there special cares after the procedure?

Good oral hygiene (including brushing, flossing, and mouth washing),regular visits and cleanings are needed. Besides, biting hard foods should be avoided.
